Former Minnesota Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe and State Representative Mike Beard will Steer Efforts to Retain Coal as a Regional Energy Source

Minneapolis, Minn. (November 20, 2014). The Coalition for a Secure Energy Future (Coalition) today announced it has officially named a former and current Minnesota legislator as its bipartisan co-chairs. Former Senate Majority Leader Roger Moe (DFL-Erskine) and State Representative Mike Beard (R-Shakopee) will get the message out to businesses, policymakers, and residents in the Upper Midwest that retaining coal as a regional energy resource will help keep electric rates low, jobs plentiful, and the economy robust.

“We are excited to announce Senator Moe and Representative Beard will take the lead in helping advocate for an all-of-the-above strategy when it comes to Minnesota’s energy policy,” said Coalition spokesperson Jason Bohrer, President and CEO of the Lignite Energy Council.

As co-chairs, Moe and Beard will work to educate business leaders and stakeholders about the coalition’s principal objectives to enhance, preserve, and protect the use of a diverse set of established energy resources, including coal, to ensure families and businesses in the Upper Midwest have affordable, abundant, and reliable electricity today and in the future.

“I look forward to the opportunity to explain to Minnesotans why continuing our North Star State’s tradition of keeping all energy options on the table will help keep the price of consumer goods affordable,” said Senator Moe.

Representative Beard agreed, adding, “Energy policy isn’t a Republican or Democratic issue. It’s a matter that impacts all hard-working Minnesota families. Senator Moe and I will make sure lawmakers have accurate information to help them make energy policy decisions that protect the best interests of the people of this state.”

A former Democratic-Farmer-Labor Party (DFL) state senator and majority leader from Erskine, Roger Moe served in the Minnesota Senate from 1971 until 2002. Mike Beard is a Republican state representative from Shakopee who served from 2002 and is not seeking another term in office.
