Minnesota and North Dakota Favor an All-of-the-Above Energy Strategy
Posted October 29, 2014
The Coalition for a Secure Energy Future recently launched a campaign protecting families and businesses from the hardships that could result from eliminating our use of the Upper Midwest’s most plentiful and affordable set of energy resources, including coal. The Coalition is comprised of a diverse set of businesses, manufacturers and citizens whose goal is to ensure the Upper Midwest and the rest of the nation have continued access to affordable and reliable energy. Our members strongly support an all-of-the-above energy policy that uses our natural resources to power cities and communities region-wide. Coal’s low prices support continued economic growth in the residential and manufacturing sectors, as well as social progress and regional prosperity.
Not long ago, Public Opinion Strategies completed a survey for the Coalition on energy policy in North Dakota and Minnesota. The survey found that most Minnesota voters (52 percent) support the use of coal to produce electricity. The survey further determined that Minnesota voters strongly support an all-of-the-above energy policy. Seventy-seven percent of likely voters in Minnesota support using domestic natural resources to keep energy prices low and maintain energy security. The poll’s executive summary notes that “voters favor the use of coal to produce electricity and overwhelmingly agree that the United States should pursue an all-of-the-above energy policy.”
Similarly, an overwhelming 85 percent of North Dakota voters favor the use of coal to produce electricity. These voters, who have seen the benefits associated with coal mining and oil production firsthand, agree that developing domestic resources for energy is crucial to sustaining affordable energy prices and preserving the available energy supply. Moreover, a majority of North Dakota voters believe the United States should emphasize production of more energy sources such as coal, gas and oil.
Clearly, these survey results show that the time is ripe for the Coalition for a Secure Energy Future to stand up for the progress and prosperity that is delivered alongside a stable and affordable supply of electricity.
Decisions about regional energy policy will touch the lives of everyone who lives and works in Minnesota and North Dakota. The future of the Upper Midwest depends heavily on the availability of affordable, dependable energy. If you are one of the majority who supports an all-of–the-above energy policy, we encourage you to take action today and tell your lawmakers about your energy concerns and subscribe to our email list.
